Recognizing Accurate Deaf Portrayals: TV Shows

Hi, my name is Marla Hatrak. I am President of National Center on Deaf Advocacy (NCDA). I

know this vlog is old news, but regardless, I think it is imperative to recognize and applaud

three different TV shows that had deaf characters.

First was New Amsterdam. I don’t typically watch that TV show, New Amsterdam. But I knew

they had a deaf surgeon played by a deaf actor, Sandra Mae Frank. Then I heard it had an

episode discussing language deprivation syndrome. That caught my eye. I was impressed, but rather skeptical when I started watching the episode. Wow! I actually thought that the deaf surgeon would be called to discuss with the family with their deaf baby the issues of language deprivation syndrome and to advise the family to learn sign language. But, really, a hearing doctor, Dr. Iggy Frome, played by Tyler Labine, talked with the family. I was impressed with how he was so kind-hearted and explained clearly the issues. I found out later that the episode was written by a deaf writer, Giselle Legere. I was utterly impressed with that episode. I think it was beautifully done.

Next was Law and Order. It had three deaf girls who were raped. Each of them had their “story” that accurately characterized deaf experiences so accurately. They are to be commended for that.

Third was Accused. The episode was shown only recently in January (2023). They asked Marlee Matlin to direct the episode which was in itself impressive. The episode was called Ava’s Story. That deaf mother who protested had the right type of spunk which I personally appreciated. Maybe she learned from Marlee Matlin’s type of spunk!

But, seriously, those three TV shows are to be commended for their accurate portrayals of deaf people, especially, the signing deaf people’s experiences. I want to recognize them.

Now, I hope there will be more episodes in the future with deaf characters being portrayed

well. Secondly, that there will be deaf talent either in front or behind the camera. To think that Marlee Matlin was asked to direct an episode.

Today’s Friday! Have a good weekend, y’all. Bye.
